“Beaver Dam” Caption Contest Commentary with Lawrence Wood

March 18, 2020 by Lawrence Wood

Caption contest - Tom ToroTom Toro’s drawing is set in a kitchen, where two beavers (who appear to be a married couple) are staring at a pile of sticks in the sink. The female beaver is speaking.

Because beavers use sticks to build dams near streams and rivers, my first caption is, “Must you every time you hear running water?”

I then thought of a far easier alternative to building a dam:

  1. “You couldn’t just buy a stopper?”
  2. “Congratulations. You saved two dollars on a stopper.”

Now let’s see how you did.

There were a lot of puns that played on the homonyms “damn” and “dam,” but these were the best:

  1. “Honey, I meant Damn with an ‘n.’’
  2. “Hal, it was a curse word, not a command.”

Like I did, many of you had the wife wondering why her husband didn’t think of an easier way to collect or stem the flow of water from the kitchen faucet:

  1. “Next time, just turn off the faucet.”
  2. “A stopper would work better.”
  3. “How about just buying a drain stopper?”
  4. “You know, you could have just changed the washer.”
  5. “Shirley next door says we can just buy a plug.”
  6. “Next time just turn off the tap.”
  7. “There’s a new invention called the drain plug.”
  8. “It just feels more natural than using the drain stopper.”
  9. “I wish you’d call a professional.”

One of you, however, had her wondering why he was even trying to stem the flow of water:

  1. “But water is supposed to come through here.”
  2. “You can’t just dam up any running water.”

Some of you noted that the sticks belong not in the kitchen but in another room:

  1. “Are you sure this is the fireplace?”
  2. “For some reason they had them in the fireplace.”

Almost every caption contest that features a drawing set in someone’s home elicits a lot of “working from home entries,” and this contest was no exception:

  1. “How much longer will you be working from home?”
  2. “Stop bringing your work home.”
  3. “Working from home today?”

Several of you recognized that building dams is an instinctual activity that’s hard to overcome:

  1. “Old habits die hard.”
  2. “Perhaps you shouldn’t go with your instincts on this one.”

The next two entries allude to a common saying about beavers:

  1. “You really have been busy.”
  2. “I see you’ve been busy.”

These captions have the wife getting a little nostalgic:

  1. “Reminds me of our first home.”
  2. “When the sink overflows we’ll feel right at home.”

While this entry has her regretting ever leaving the countryside: “I knew moving to the city was a mistake.”

This is the best dishwashing joke: “They aren’t going to gnaw themselves.”

And this is the best caption to come out of left field: “You need to stop the Ambien.”

The best caption of the week, however, is, “That’s your solution for everything.”
